Early adopters of organic grain growing had few markets for their produce. A small percentage of the crop could be sold to home-millers, but there were few processing outlets. Some grain growers purchased mills and marketed their own product, usually stone-ground flour. Malcolm and Sue Loechel and their children are BFA certified farmers who farm at Nildotie, in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia.Malcolm was born in the district and has farmed there all his life. He says “I’ve farmed for 35 years since I left school, but I was farming long before that too.”The Murray Mallee soils are not easy to farm, organic or not, and Malcolm readily describes his country as fragile and marginal.
