Murray irrigators are getting a doubling of their water allocations in South Australia, up from 5 to 10 per cent of the full entitlement.
Amid prolonged drought conditions, River Murray Minister Karlene Maywald says that improved inflows during August have allowed for the increase.
"There's been an improvement in inflows over August above the minimums that we use for planning purposes under worst-case scenarios," she said.
"It means that South Australia has an extra 30 gigalitres that we're actually able to apply for consumptive use."
Mrs Maywald concedes it remains far short of what is needed.
"It's still a long way from where we need to be to be sustainable," she said.
"As a consequence of the improvements, 50 per cent of what would be allocated to South Australia goes towards reducing the advances that we've been able to negotiate from New South Wales and Victoria to enable us to provide 100 per cent of our private irrigator carry-over and also to have an opening allocation at the beginning of the year."
